CLEVELAND, OH, May 9, 2007 – May is National Electrical Safety Month and a good time for consumers to evaluate or initiate safety programs in their homes. According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, electrical malfunctions cause over 140,000 fires, 400 deaths, 4,000 injuries and about $1.6 billion in property damage each year. Local home inspectors can help consumers identify electrical risks and advise them on corrective actions. “Eliminating electrical hazards starts with awareness,” stated Kylene Golubski, Vice President of Business Development for ProSpection Corporate. “We simply just don’t think about our electricity until the moment it malfunctions. Consumers can be more proactive and take measures to prevent damage and injuries by having inspections performed as part of their real estate transactions and on an annual basis thereafter.” “The goal of an inspection is always to identify elements that are either in fair or defective condition, so clients know if repair or replacement is necessary now or in the immediate future,” stated Golubski. “Unlike repair contractors or builders, inspectors have no ulterior motives and serve solely as informers and educators to clients. What people may not realize is that they can call on their local inspector on an annual basis just to check the major systems and components, such as the electrical. As the saying goes, ‘an ounce of prevention truly is worth a pound of cure.’” For more information on electrical safety, visit the Electrical Safety Foundation International’s website, http://www.electrical-safety.org/ or call 703-841-3229.
